Earth Day
This Earth Day my class and I are going to a park and planting indigenous plants. It’s important to do this because this park has more plants that don’t belong in this region than plants that should be there.
What are you doing for Earth Day? If you want other ideas, maybe you could try to not use as much electricty or water. You could take a shorter shower or lower your heater by...

One Year Oil Spill Anniversary
This is the one year anniversary of the oil spill that inspired me to make this website. In a few weeks, it will be the anniversary of my website. Please pick up trash in your neighborhood and clean up your creeks to help remember this day and hope it never happens again.
The whole planet respects us, but we don’t respect it. It gives us resources like air, water, seafood, pretty much...

Sea Turtle Rescue
One Starts Many adopted a green sea turtle named Mydas from the Audubon Aquarium. This sea turtle doesn’t live in my house, but I could visit Mydas at the aquarium in New Orleans anytime I want. The money we spent to adopt him helps pay for his food and other stuff. If you want to adopt Mydas or another sea creature you can visit www.auduboninstitute.org.
Here are some turtle facts...

Have you heard of Stephen R. Swinburne?
Today at my school, author Stephen Swinburne visited. He writes children’s books that tell a funny story or poem and they have facts in the back. I really like his books because he has lots about the ocean. My favorite book of his is Turtle Tide because it is about sea turtles, my second favorite ocean animal. Look for these 3 books I thought were interesting: Ocean Soup, Saving...

Quit Your Plastic Tip
Stop using plastic water bottles and bottled water. Too many people use them. Instead you can buy reusuable aluminum bottles. In Going Blue by Cathryn Berger Kaye and Philippe Cousteau I found out in 2006 more than 17 million barrels of oil wree used to manufacture plastic water bottles and generated more than 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide.

On the reef side, One Starts Money raised a total of $1145.
I wanted to send this money to two important places in the Gulf. $560 is going to KINDD (Kids in Need During Disaster to help purchase 14 new...
ccsagan asked: How did you feel talking to the audience Friday night at Reef and Beef Relief? I learned a lot from your report about the Gulf of Mexico.

OCEANA has a new online magazine →
Oceana sent a ship named LATITUDE into the Gulf to do more research. They want to find out how the animals are doing. This magazine has more information about the ocean.
enteam asked: Hi Dylan,
I look forward to our first Oceans Club meeting at school tomorrow. You did a great job sharing your mission with the Lower School today. I wonder what would happen to the Gulf if we cleaned up the streams that feed into the Mississippi River. Maybe our club members would want to help with this.
I also wonder if we should start a book club with books about the ocean.

Help Clean Up Water in Your State →
Clean water is important because it helps the environment. Everyone needs clean water to survive. One way kids can help is to look for water clean up projects.
If you live in Missouri, there is an Operation Clean Stream to help clean up rivers. If you live in another state, try using google to look for other groups that are cleaning up water near you.

Books I found helpful
My class talked about the Exxon Valdez spill a little bit so I checked out a few more books at the library to learn about other oil spills.
The Exxon Valdez is an oil tanker that spilled in Alaska in 1989. Over 11 million gallons of oil spilled into the Sound.
It took years for workers to clean up and many say in some areas there is residue from the oil still.
The books I recommend are...
